Bruxism

Bruxism is a condition characterized by involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth that occurs mainly during the night. This condition often causes jaw and neck pain as well as headaches. In some cases, the teeth are damaged.

What causes bruxism?

While the exact cause of bruxism is unknown, we do know that there are various physical, psychological, and genetic components that contribute to this disorder. The main risk factors are:
  • Stress
  • Certain sleep disorders such as sleep apnea
  • Family history: If someone in your family suffers from bruxism, your risk of developing it will be greater.
  • Certain neurological disorders such as dementia, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome
  • Medications or substances: Some antipsychotic medications or antidepressants can contribute to bruxism. Also, some recreational drugs can increase the risk of bruxism.
