Fine lines and wrinkles
With the passage of time, wrinkles and fine lines inevitably appear on the face. They are associated with skin aging and often appear on the forehead, in the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), on the cheeks and around the mouth. While fine lines are superficial and close to the surface of the skin, wrinkles are deeper and more pronounced.
What are the causes of wrinkles and fine lines?
With age, exposure to UV rays and daily exposure to surrounding pollution, the skin’s collagen and elastin become damaged. The skin begins to lose its elasticity and firmness and fine lines and wrinkles set in.
There are different types of wrinkles caused by different factors
- Expression (or dynamic) wrinkles: This type of wrinkle occurs when the muscles of the face contract. When the facial muscles are at rest, the wrinkles become less visible. Expression wrinkles include frown lines (vertical line between the eyes), crow’s feet, and the forehead wrinkles that occur when you raise your eyebrows.
- Static wrinkles: These are expression lines that are anchored in the skin and remain present even when facial muscles are at rest.
- Sleep wrinkles: Sleep wrinkles form differently, depending on the sleeping position. They frequently occur in people who sleep on their side or stomach.
Although age is one of the most important and inevitable factors in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, other factors can influence this phenomenon.
- UV rays: Skin damage caused by light rays is one of the most common causes of fine lines and wrinkles. Even if the sun is not directly visible behind clouds, UV rays are still present, damaging the skin and contributing to the degradation of collagen.
- Pollution: Air pollution contributes to the production of free radicals that circulate in our ambient air and damage the skin.
- Smoking: The substances in tobacco damage the skin by accelerating the breakdown of collagen and decreasing its production. The skin thus becomes wrinkled and loses its elasticity. Smoking further contributes to the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth and lips, commonly known as smoker’s wrinkles.

FAQ
How can I prevent fine lines and wrinkles?
Applying sunscreen daily is the very best way to protect yourself from solar damage and prevent premature skin aging. The use of a topical antioxidant such as vitamin C will neutralize free radicals and prevent the skin damage associated with them.
Smoking is a major factor in premature skin aging. Quitting smoking also means putting the brakes on premature collagen breakdown. Finally, the pressure exerted on the face during sleep can contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Sleeping on your back can slow the progression of wrinkles and fine lines.
Is there a minimum age to start treatments for fine lines and wrinkles?
There is no minimum age for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. However, knowing that it is much easier to prevent than to treat, we recommend not waiting for wrinkles to be anchored and static before taking preventative measures.
Depending on your age and the skin problems to be addressed, our team can advise you on the best treatments and preventative measures to achieve beautiful skin.
