IPL photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to even out skin tone by reducing the appearance of discoloured pigmentation spots and the appearance of rosacea. IPL also helps to restore radiance to the complexion, tighten pores and improve skin elasticity.

What is IPL photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation uses an IPL device that emits light pulses of different wavelengths. Depending on the condition being treated, our medical aesthetics technician sets the device at the appropriate parameter. IPL can target the melanin contained in pigment spots, the hemoglobin contained in the blood vessels and the water contained in the dermis. In the dermis, intense pulsed light stimulates a cell called the fibroblast to produce new collagen. After several treatments, this new collagen softens the appearance of wrinkles, the width of pores, and any unevenness or irregularity in skin texture. By using specific filters to control the wavelength of pulsed light, sun-damaged skin and vascular lesions can also be paled or improved through IPL photorejuvenation.
Photorejuvenation with IPL can be performed on many areas, the most frequently treated being the face, neck, décolleté, hands and forearms.

The Rejuvena Approach

How does an IPL photorejuvenation session work?

Our goal is to offer you personalized, effective and safe treatments.

We will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine whether an IPL photorejuvenation treatment is the best option for you, and to ensure there are no contraindications to proceeding.

Here are the steps for your first consultation:

Review of your medical record
We will discuss your medical history, medication, allergies and previous treatments.
Photography
The photos are kept in your medical file and allow us to evaluate the results and progress of your treatments together.
Discussion of your concerns
Your professional will discuss your expectations with you and make suggestions to meet your needs. The areas to be treated will be identified.
Here are the steps of the IPL treatment:
Step 1:
The treated area will be cleaned and you will be fitted with eye protection.
Step 2:
A gel will then be applied to your skin to serve as a calming agent and to promote the even diffusion of pulsed light.
Step 3:
The IPL device will be moved over the targeted area as it intermittently emits intense pulsed light. The treatment is usually completed in less than 30 minutes.

FAQ

When can I expect to see results?
Within one to two weeks of each IPL photorejuvenation session you should notice a visible improvement in your complexion, with a progressive reduction in pigment spots and rosacea. The optimal result of each treatment session will be visible after approximately one month. The total number of sessions will depend on your condition at the outset of your treatment plan, and the recommendations made by our skincare professional.
How many treatments are needed to achieve optimal results?
The number of sessions required depends on the problem to be corrected. Although the response to this question varies from person to person, a series of 3 to 5 initial treatments, at 4-week intervals, is usually recommended to achieve optimal results. Thereafter, maintenance treatments should be performed every 6-12 months in order to maintain results.
How to properly prepare your skin before a treatment?
  • Prior to IPL photorejuvneation, it is essential to avoid any tanning, whether naturally or through the use of tanning beds or self-tanning products. The energy in IPL treatments absorbs the pigment in your skin, which greatly increases your risk of pigmentation change or injury. You should not receive IPL treatment if you have tanned skin – you must wait until the tan has fully subsided. You should avoid tanning or direct sun exposure without solar protection for a period of two weeks after the treatment. If you are using self-tanning creams, please discontinue any usage for 2-3 weeks prior to your IPL treatments.
  • It is advisable to precede treatments with a chemical peel when IPL photorejuvenation is performed on the face. The chemical peel will exfoliate your skin to maximize the effects of photorejuvenation.

One week before treatment

  • Avoid applying products to the skin that can increase skin sensitivity such as retinoids, exfoliants, or topical antibiotics.
  • Avoid waxing, depilatory creams or electrolysis on the areas to be treated.
What to expect after treatment?

Swelling and redness of both the treated and untreated areas may occur as a result of your procedure and persist for 24-48 hours. It is not uncommon for some clients to notice that the area under the eyes is swollen for the first 24-48 hours. This swelling will gradually subside. There will be very minimal heat emanating from the area for the first 24 hours – the degree and intensity will be similar to a mild sunburn.

IPL treatment for pigmentary disorders: The pigment may become darker, brown, purple or black. The pigment may crust for a few days and then peel off. This lasts approximately 3-7 days.

IPL treatment for vascular lesions: The vessels may become white, grey, black, or purple. They may also become pale or darken (over the next few days, the damaged tissue will be absorbed). This lasts approximately 3-7 days.

IPL acne treatment: Lesions may darken and become tender to the touch. This lasts approximately 5-10 days.

What are the contraindications to IPL photorejuvenation treatment?

Although Intense Pulse Light technology is very safe, there are some contraindications to its use in certain cases. Processing may not be carried out if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have an active infection in the area to be treated or
  • You have a metal implant in the area to be treated
  • Your skin is tanned (either by the sun or by self-tanning lotions)
  • You plan to go out in the sun in the weeks following the treatment, especially beach holidays
  • You have received a medical-aesthetics treatment in the same area in the month prior to the IPL treatment

A complete evaluation including a health questionnaire will be carried out by your healthcare professional prior to the first treatment to ensure that you are a good candidate for IPL photorejuvenation and the treatment can be carried out in complete safety.
