PHOTOREJUVENATION (IPL)

Photoaging refers to skin changes that occur due to repeated exposure to sunlight, combined with exposure to the free radicals in environmental pollution, our own aging process, and our genetic predispositions. The latter is characterized by the presence of pigmentation (brown spots), fine lines and wrinkles, a dull complexion and telangiectasias - small, dilated blood vessels on the surface of the skin.

The good news is that very effective solutions exist to reduce the skin problems related to photoaging.

Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation - also referred to as ‘photofacial’ treatments – use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to even the complexion by reducing the appearance of pigmentation (brown spots) and telangiectasias. The repeated use of pulsed light also helps restore radiance to the complexion, tightens pores and improves skin elasticity.

At Clinique Rejuvena, we use the Venus Versa platform, a high-performance device approved by Health Canada. Our treatments are performed under medical supervision and the parameters are carefully adjusted according to your needs to offer you a safe, effective treatment.

Regions treated

Photorejuvenation with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can be performed on many areas, the most frequently treated being the face, neck, décolleté, hands and forearms.

Consultation and treatment

During your initial consultation, one of our professionals will first assess whether IPL is the appropriate solution to meet your needs. If so, the technology will then be explained to you in detail and a treatment plan including the ideal number of sessions will be recommended.

Your first treatment can be performed during the consultation appointment. Your face will be cleansed, and a gel will be applied to your facial skin. The treatment is usually done in less than 30 minutes. During the procedure, you will feel warmth in the treated area, but no major discomfort.

Results

After the treatment, the brown spots will initially darken and may develop a rougher texture. They will then gradually fade.

A decrease in pigment spots and telangiectasias as well as an overall improvement in complexion will be visible about 1 to 2 weeks after the treatment. The optimal result will be obtained approximately 1 month after the series of treatments recommended by your professional.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the recovery time?

Following an IPL treatment, you will be able to resume your normal activities. Your skin may be slightly pink, and a slight feeling of warmth may be present during the hours following treatment.

How many treatments are needed for optimal results?

Although this response varies from person to person, a series of 3-4 initial treatments at intervals of 4 weeks is usually recommended for optimal results. Thereafter, we recommend a maintenance treatment every 6-12 months.

During the initial consultation, your healthcare professional will advise you on the best treatment approach to meet your needs.

How can I maintain my results and prevent photoaging?

It is quite possible to minimize the appearance of photoaging by following a few instructions.

  • Perform a course of Intense Pulsed Light treatments as recommended by your healthcare professional
  • Avoid the use of tanning booths
  • Avoid sun exposure. Sunlight is most damaging between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, so always try to wear clothing that will cover your skin from exposure (hat, long-sleeved shirts, etc.)
  • Incorporate sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 into your morning skincare routine and reapply frequently throughout the day (approximately every 2 hours)
  • Make sure you have an appropriate skincare routine to properly nourish your skin that targets and prevents imperfections related to photoaging. In addition to sun protection, antioxidant and skin-lightening products, exfoliating and moisturizing products could all be integrated into your skincare routine. Do not hesitate to ask our professionals for advice on which products are best suited to your skin type and particular needs.

Am I a good candidate for Photorejuvenation treatment?

Although it is a very safe technology, there are some contraindications to the use of IPL technology.

The treatment cannot be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have an active infection in the area to be treated or if you have a metal implant in the area to be treated.

Also, it is important to know that it will be impossible to perform the treatment if your skin is tanned (either by the sun or by self-tanning lotions), if you plan to expose yourself to the sun in the weeks following the treatment or if you have received a medical-aesthetic treatment in the area to be treated in the month preceding the pulsed light treatment.

A complete assessment including a health questionnaire will be performed by your healthcare professional before the first treatment to ensure that you are a good candidate, and that the treatment will be carried out safely.
