PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP) FOR HAIR LOSS

What is PRP?

Platelets are one of the constituents of blood, as are red blood cells and white blood cells. Platelets have the main function of contributing to clotting, but they also have the ability to release many growth factors that are then directed to a designated place in the body to speed up healing or regeneration processes. In aesthetic medicine, the properties of platelets are used to contribute to skin rejuvenation, to slow hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is obtained by collecting a small amount of blood like that required for a standard laboratory test. The blood collected in the specially designed tube is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the components. Once centrifugation is complete, the PRP is collected and ready to be administered.

How does PRP for hair loss work?

Hair loss begins on average, from the age of 25 in men and 40 in women. Several factors like hormonal problems, thyroid gland problems and anemia can contribute to hair loss. However, heredity remains the most important risk factor for hair loss.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are one of the most effective treatments for hair loss. Indeed, studies show that this technology, using the growth factors present in our blood, can slow hair loss, stimulate hair regrowth and produce an overall improvement in hair quality. It is a safe, natural, painless treatment with minimal recovery time.

The following hair conditions can be treated with PRP:

  • Mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia in men or wome
  • Hair loss following pregnancy or other treatable or reversible hormonal conditions

The treatment of PRP for hair loss is not possible if there is an absence of hair in one or more of the areas to be treated since the stimulation of follicles is impossible in the absence of hair. Also, the best results are obtained in people for whom hair loss began less than 5 years ago. A consultation with our professionals will determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

PRP evaluation and treatment

Our goal is to offer you a personalized, effective and safe course of treatment that will achieve your best results. To begin, we will complete a thorough evaluation to determine whether PRP treatment is the best option for you, and to ensure that there are no contraindications to the procedure.

If you choose to proceed, our treating professional will perform a venipuncture in the crease of your elbow to take a small amount of blood. The specially designed tube will then be placed in a centrifuge for a period of 5 minutes. Meanwhile, your treating professional will disinfect the injection area of your scalp.

Once centrifugation is complete, the Platelet-Rich Plasma will be extracted from the tube and prepared for injection.

The complete appointment for a hair PRP treatment lasts from 45 minutes to 1 hour. However, the injection time is about 10 to 15 minutes. Since we have various pain control strategies and the needles used are very thin, the discomfort felt is minimal.

Number of sessions required

The treatment of PRP for hair loss requires an initial cure of 4 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Then, in order to maintain the results, maintenance treatment is recommended every 6-12 months.

The results will be visible about 2 to 3 months after treatment.

What to expect after a PRP treatment?

Thanks to its regenerative properties, PRP is used to speed up healing which means that the recovery time for this treatment is relatively short.

First days after treatment:

  • Your scalp may be more sensitive to the touch
  • You may experience a feeling of tension in the treated area
  • Some people may have headaches immediately after treatment. If this is the case, you can take acetaminophen.
  • Redness and small bruising may occur and last 5-7 days.

With the technique used at Clinique Rejuvena, there is no loss of PRP. This means that there will be no residual PRP on your scalp. You can therefore resume your regular activities immediately after treatment. However, we recommend waiting 24 hours before washing your hair or engaging in any activity that causes significant sweating of the scalp (sports, saunas, etc.).
