Stretch marks

Stretch marks are micro-cracks in the collagen and elastin fibers of the deep dermis that appear in the form of streaks on the skin. They are initially red and evolve, gradually fading to take on the same color as the surrounding skin. Stretch marks usually appear on the buttocks, thighs, breasts and stomach.

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are caused by tissue distension related to stretching the skin too quickly. This stretching causes the collagen and elastin fibers to deteriorate, leading to a loss of elasticity and spontaneous tearing.

Several causes and risk factors are associated with the appearance of stretch marks.

  • Genetics: There is a genetic predisposition to the formation of stretch marks.
  • Hormones: Hormonal imbalances, for example during puberty or pregnancy, can increase the risk of stretch marks.
  • Pregnancy: Rapid weight gain and higher hormone levels can lead to skin tears.
  • Obesity
  • Very rapid weight gain or loss
  • Oral or topical corticosteroid treatments
  • The use of anabolic steroids in athletes
  • Finer, thinner skin
  • Cushing’s syndrome
